"Standing in the riverbed of the Awatere River in New Zealand's high country on the South Island, I felt the sharpness of the freezing air envelop my entire being. The river flow was calm after months of drought, and yet its icy waters were relentless as they carved a path through the rugged rocks. The crack willow trees glow red as if trying to warm the air, and, against the jade water, the contrast is a powerful reminder of nature’s ability to surprise and inspire. "
