Bernie Kaye

Bernie Kaye is a self-taught photographer whose practice began more than a decade ago with an impulse to capture the vivid, ever-changing world of Melbourne’s street art. What started as straightforward documentation of urban expression soon deepened into a fascination with forgotten locations, where silence lingers and time forever leaves its mark.

Guided by the principles of Urban Exploration (Urbex), Kaye seeks out abandoned structures, ruins, and the remnants of human presence. Through the lens, she reveals the quiet narratives embedded in these environments: the echoes of lives once lived, objects stilled in time, and the haunting beauty that arises through decay. Each photograph becomes a dialogue between memory and impermanence, inviting viewers to consider what remains when human presence has receded.

As the work evolved, Miss Kaye turned the camera inward, creating self-portraits within these lifeless settings. Working exclusively with natural light and minimal props, she transforms derelict locations into intimate stages for storytelling. The resulting images act as both self-expression and personal inquiry, meditations on vulnerability, resilience, and the human connection to spaces stripped of life yet rich with history.

Miss Kaye embraces a minimalist approach that favours authenticity over heavy digital manipulation; for her, altering the scene detracts from its emotional truth, and the rawness of each location is integral to the story it holds.
